“a glimmer, a glimpse, a glare”2023

The painting series "a glimmer, a glimpse, a glare" draws attention to the climate crisis as a global issue that deepens existing inequalities, particularly in marginalised communities. Within Scotland, Black and POC communities often face isolation, finding themselves underrepresented in institutions and community spaces. This series addresses the urgent need for climate justice to foster intimate, supportive environments where minority voices can be heard and shared. For the artist, the act of creating such spaces is both a form of resistance and empowerment, offering agency to individuals who are otherwise marginalised. Through these spaces, communities can find strength in solidarity and supporting each other.

Central to this series is the exploration of identity and empowerment for women who are racialised in Scotland. The artworks create a sanctuary where women of colour can be their authentic selves, free from the pressures of conforming to societal norms, particularly in predominantly white spaces. Through portraiture, art-making, and conversation, the series fosters a sense of belonging and care—allowing participants to discuss difficult topics and reclaim their narratives. These visual stories encourage younger generations to find strength and pride in their identities, with the understanding that self-care and community care are deeply intertwined. The paintings act as a reminder that, in the face of the overwhelming challenges posed by the climate crisis and systemic oppression, there is immense power in self-reflection, creativity, and collective action.
